Saves time in resolving bugs found via portable stimulus

Key Benefits

 •  Streamlines detection and debugging of issues found via portable stimulus
 •  Provides easy-to-read UML activity diagrams
 •  Saves time in debug process

As defined by the Accellera Portable Stimulus Working Group, portable stimulus is a single representation
of an SoC testbench for hardware/software verification. It’s ideal for a variety of users across different
levels of integration (IP, sub-systems, SoCs, and systems). Portable stimulus can be used under different
configurations to generate different implementations for verification that run on a variety of execution
platforms, including, but not necessarily limited to:

 •  Simulation
 •  Emulation
 •  FPGA prototyping
 •  Post-silicon

Before the working group formed in January 2015, Cadence, an active and contributing member of the
group, introduced Perspec™ System Verifier to address the requirements for portable test and stimulus.
Perspec System Verifier provides an abstract model-based approach for defining portable stimulus and
uses Unified Modeling Language (UML) activity diagrams to visualize the generated tests.

Because of the complexity of these tests, effective debug is as important a consideration as the
development/generation of the tests. That’s why Cadence has developed the Indago™ Portable Stimulus
Debug App. The app leverages the easy-to-read UML activity diagrams used in Perspec System Verifier to
help streamline finding and debugging issues found via portable stimulus. Even when a test requires
concurrent behaviors, you’ll still have an easy-to-read diagram of that test. The UML activity diagram
offers clear views of both scheduling and datapath to make isolation of issues much easier—even for
someone who didn’t create the test.

The Indago Portable Stimulus Debug App uses the Indago platform infrastructure to synchronize this
state-of-the-art activity diagram view with all of the other elements, including hardware trace waveforms
and embedded software. This, combined with the power of Indago post-process debug with forward and
backward navigation, helps save valuable time in resolving bugs.
